One of our most used rooms in the house is our sunroom. It's small but has a lot of light almost all year round. During winter I tend to keep the blinds down to give us a little privacy. Each spring I really deep clean the room and raise the blinds for summer.

Our dogs love the sunroom too so cleaning it involves washing the couch slipcovers and cleaning the window screens. I also take the time to clean the window blinds. They get dusty and some dog hair in them.

How To Clean Window Blinds

To start, cleaning the blinds will probably kick up some dust in the room. So if you have an air purifier you may want to set it up to run while you are cleaning them.

I have found that running a vacuum over the blinds only picks up so much dust. My preferred method is to actually wipe down each row of the blinds.

This can be time-consuming so when I found this tool on Amazon for only a few dollars I couldn't wait to try it out.

Fair warning, it did take forever to get delivered. I think it took about 2 weeks to get it. It makes cleaning the blinds much faster than going slat by slat. It has two microfiber removable sleeves that can come off and go in the wash.

Start by lowering your blinds all the way down as far as they will go. Then, adjust the slats so they are angled down a little bit.

If your blinds are really dusty and you don't want to have the dust going everywhere you can spray the blinds duster with a little bit of water. It will help the dust stick to it instead of flying everywhere.

Then start at the top of the blinds and grab two slats with the dusting tool. Lightly squeeze the dusting tool and move the tool back and forth a few times over the blinds. Then let go and move down to the next set of slats.

If your blinds are really dirty or you are doing a lot of blinds you may need to wash the removable sleeves a few times while you are cleaning them. The removable sleeves can go in the washing machine just like microfiber cloths do.

If I go more than a month or two between cleanings my blinds tend to get really dusty and I will need to change the sleeves a few times. You can see below all the dust from my blinds.

Slowly work your way down the window blinds until you are done. When you have finished check the blinds for any dirt or spills on the blinds.

If you have any you can use a damp microfiber cloth and a little bit of dawn dish soap to clean them up.

Let your blinds completely dry before you raise them back up. This is especially important if you have wood blinds because you don't want them to get water damaged.

Once the blinds are dry I recommend raising them up all the way and vacuuming down the window frames. I am always amazed at how much dust can come off of the blinds.

Don't forget to clean your blind duster tool and let it dry for next time.

It is best to leave the air purifier in the room for an hour or two after cleaning the blinds to get all the extra dust that is kicked up. I also recommend going through and thoroughly dusting the room afterward.

When your blinds are clean and free from dust you can now open up your windows and let the fresh air in without all the dust.
