I am a huge lover of margarine, not butter. We make a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches and bagels with butter in our house. There is nothing more annoying to me than when the bread keeps ripping while you are spreading butter on it.
So, despite the fact that I have heard margarine isn't good for you I continued to buy it. Then, I was talking to my sister and she told me about this trick to make your butter spreadable. It's fairly easy to do and makes a large batch of spreadable butter so I only need to make it once a month.
You will need one cup of butter (you can see how to make butter) and about 3/4 cup oil. I used vegetable oil in mine to keep the cost down, but you can use olive oil too. Let the butter sit out for a couple of hours until it is nice and soft.
Place the butter in a bowl and use an immersion blender to get the butter whipped. Then add about 3/4 a cup of oil. You can add a little more or less depending on how spreadable you would like it.
Use the immersion blender to get the butter and oil whipped together.
Now at this point you will probably start to think I am crazy ( and I am!) because your spreadable butter is a soupy mess.

But, once it sets up in the fridge for an hour or two the butter will harden some and will become more like margarine.
While the butter is very liquefied you will want to move it into the containers it will be stored in. I love these containers from Ball. Place them in the fridge and after about an hour you have spreadable butter.
The butter becomes harden, but not so hard that it isn't easy to spread. So, if you are tired of bread that gets torn up from the butter try out this simple recipe to make your butter become more spreadable. It's so easy to make and tastes great too.

Love it! Great idea. How long does the butter last in the butter bell? I used to keep my butter on the counter instead of in the fridge, but it would start growing mold in a couple of days.

The butter bell stays on the counter, too, so butter's at room temperature. It lasts more than a week. We usually use all the butter before it molds (and we're only eating toast and hot breakfast foods at home on the weekends.) I think we've only had one instance of molding, and that was in the heat of the summer, when the water level in the bell was likely too low.
