Vinyl flooring is a popular choice for its durability and easy maintenance. However, ground in dirt can be tough to remove.
Not only do we use our laundry room for laundry, but it's also our entrance from the garage. We also use it to keep the dog food bowls and feed him.

It has a pitted texture that gathers ground in dirt. It seemed like no amount of mopping or scrubbing would fix it.

How To Clean Vinyl Floors With Ground In Dirt
If you are anything like me you probably regularly mop your vinyl floors and still have problems in the textured areas. Using the ingredients below you can take your vinyl floors back to new again.
Ingredients for Cleaning Vinyl Floors
- Mop
- Vacuum or Broom
- Floor cleaner (I make my own)
- Steam iron (or a steam mop if you have it)
- Washcloth
- Water
Step by Step Cleaning Process
You will want to start by either vacuuming or mopping the vinyl floors. This will pick up any loose debris that is on your floors so it doesn't get ground in the the textured floor.
Step 1: Using hot water and a floor cleaner mop your floors to remove the top layer of dirt and grime. I use my own recipe for homemade floor cleaner but any brand will work.
Step 2: Once the floors are mopped and dried you can now work on removing the ground in dirt. If you have a steam mop just follow the instructions on the mop to clean the areas that are still dirty. If you don't have a steam mop follow the directions below.
Step 3: Fill up the steam iron with water and set it on the lowest setting.
Step 4: Run the washcloth under the faucet until wet and then ring it out so it is damp but not dripping.
Step 5: Once the iron is to temperature up lay the wet washcloth over the area you want to clean.
Step 6: Then take the iron and run it over the washcloth for about 10 seconds.
Note: You will want to make sure you keep the iron moving over the different areas of the washcloth so you don't overheat the vinyl.
Step 7: After about 10 seconds remove the iron and the washcloth.
Tip: Be careful because the washcloth will now be very hot from the iron. You may want to wear rubber gloves to prevent getting burned.

Step 8: The washcloth should have soaked up the dirt and grime from the vinyl floor. If it didn't, lay it back down and repeat the process until all the dirt is gone.
Step 9: As you work over the areas of the floor that is dirty you will need to rewet the cloth to keep it damp.
Step 10: Keep moving the washcloth and running the iron over it until you have cleaned all the areas.
Step 11: Once you have cleaned all the areas I recommend rinsing the floors with some warm water and a mop.
You can see below in the before picture my vinyl flooring was filthy. Despite being mopped recently there was still plenty of dirt left behind on the textured vinyl.
I was amazed at the difference it made! It not only removed all the ground in dirt on the vinyl floor but it also took off some paint stains on the vinyl from the previous owners. We have lived here for over 10 years so I know the stains are at least 10 years old.
I am so thrilled to learn this awesome trick on how to get ground in dirt out of vinyl flooring. In about 10 minutes time I had my laundry room floor looking clean again. Plus, there was no need for harsh chemicals.
If you have a very large room this will obviously take you a lot more time and you may be better investing in a steam mop to clean it instead.
Since cleaning the floor a couple of months ago the vinyl flooring has stayed clean. I am hoping I won't need to use this trick again for another year or two.
