Stocking up on foods when prices are low is one of my favorite ways to save money. It is so easy to do and doesn't take a lot of time.
When you are stocking up on foods like dairy products they may only last so long, so freezing them is a great way to extend the time you get from the dairy products.
I often freeze cream cheese because we use a ton of cream cheese and it is just so simple to do. Wondering how to freeze cream cheese? It's easy!
How To Freeze Cream Cheese
Cream Cheese is probably about the easiest thing you could freeze. If you are new to freezing foods this is a great one to start with.
Items Needed:
- cream cheese (still in the box or package)
- pen or market (to add the date)
- Ziploc bag- very helpful if you are freezing multiple blocks.
Note: You will want to freeze the cream cheese before the use-by date on the package.
To freeze cream cheese keep it in the original packaging and write the date you are freezing it on the packaging.
If you are freezing multiple packages of cream cheese you can store them in a large Ziploc bag so the packages of cream cheese don't get lost in your freezer.
It's amazing what I sometimes find in the bottom of my freezer. 🙁
Using Frozen Cream Cheese
When you are ready to use the cream cheese remove it from the freezer and let it thaw. Letting it thaw in the refrigerator overnight works great.
You can also have them thaw by sitting them on the counter for a couple of hours.
Does Freezing Cream Cheese Alter Consistency?
Yes, one of the downsides to freezing cream cheese is that it will alter the consistency.
The cream cheese may be a little lumpy after being frozen. You can just stir it up until it is mixed again. Frozen cream cheese may not be the best for spreading on bagels.

Note: Because of the consistency, it is best to use it in dishes that will be baked, cooked or mixed in with other stuff like in a dip.
I mostly use frozen cream cheese in soups, my crockpot reuben sandwiches, and my favorite caramel apple dip. You can’t even tell the cream cheese has been frozen.
By stocking up and freezing I can easily save money. So next time you see a sale on cream cheese you can stock up and freeze it.
How Long Will It Last In The Freezer?
Cream cheese is best to use in about 3 months. You can store it in the freezer for up to six months, but it may go rancid.
Can I Store Opened Packages Of Cream Cheese?
I don't recommend freezing opened packages of cream cheese. You never know what has contaminated your cream cheese while using it. To prevent food-borne illnesses I recommend only freezing unopened packs.
