I have two dogs and as much as I love them they make my house smell, well, like dogs. It's not too bad in spring or fall when the windows are opened every once in a while.
However, about the middle of winter, the house just gets that doggy smell. I used to buy the Glade Carpet Powder and it worked great to help with the smells, however, I noticed they are full of chemicals that I am not so comfortable using on my carpet.
So I decided to make my own homemade carpet deodorizer. It is really easy to make (5 minutes or less!) and doesn't cost much money.
If you want your home to smell fresh without using a bunch of chemicals check out this easy-to-make homemade carpet deodorizer. It smells great and is so simple to make.
Why This Works
This DIY carpet deodorizer works great for a few reasons.
- Baking soda has chemicals in it that counteract the acids that cause the bad smells.
- The essential oils leave a light fragrance in your carpet and vacuum that isn't overpowering.
- You can adjust how stong the smell is by adding more or less drops.
Homemade Carpet Deodorizer
To make this carpet freshener you will need a few things.
- Ingredients for Carpet Deodorizer:
- baking soda
- essential oil (from Amazon)
- jar to store the deodorizer in
You will want to start with a canning jar and some baking soda. Put a cup of baking soda in the canning jar.
Then drop in about 4-5 drops of essential oils, I love this Serenity Oil from Amazon.
But, you can use whatever scent you like. You could put in some cinnamon smell around the holidays to make it smell more festive.
Then, put the lid on the canning jar and give it a couple of good shakes.
From here you can do a couple of things to disperse the homemade carpet powder.
You can use a nail to poke 4 or 5 holes in the lid or if you want to be fancy you can get these fantastic shaker lids by Ball.
I started with the nail poke lids but since I love this homemade carpet deodorizer so much I finally switched to the nicer lids.
You can now shake the carpet deodorizer all over the carpet. I like to sprinkle it on pretty thick.
Once you shake it on the carpet let it sit for 15-30 minutes. While it is sitting the homemade carpet deodorizer makes the room smell fantastic!
