Recently I have been moving to more natural cleaners for my home. I love to make my cleaners like my dusting spray because they don't contain all the chemicals in the regular cleaners.
I was looking for something easy and inexpensive to clean the toilet, and of course, I wanted it to work well.
Cleaning a toilet bowl is bad enough without it not removing the grime and hard water build-up.
I finally came up with this recipe for homemade toilet cleaner that is easy, frugal, and works great. It is so simple!

DIY Toilet Cleaner
With a DIY toilet cleaner, most people are looking for 3 things. It needs to be easy to use, clean your toilets, and disinfect the toilet.
Vinegar is one of those products that can pretty much clean anything. It tends to be one of the first cleaners I reach for when I am cleaning around the house so of course I used it to help clean and disinfect the toilet.
Check out the items needed below.
Items Needed:
- Vinegar
- Lavender Essential Oils
- Dish Soap (I use blue Dawn)
- Spray or Squeeze Bottle
We tend to get hard water stains in our toilet bowls and the vinegar made the stains disappear. When cleaning the toilet you will want to make sure that you use just plain cleaning vinegar.
Note: If you use anything like the darker apple cider vinegar you could risk discoloring the toilet bowl.
The vinegar in the DIY toilet cleaner will help kill the germs and bacteria floating around in your toilet.
How To Make DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner
Step 1: Remove the lid from the squeeze bottle and fill with about 1 1/2 cups of vinegar.
Step 2: Add about 4 drops of dish soap. I prefer blue dawn.
Step 3: Then add about 5-10 drops of lavender oil to the bottle.
Note: Lavender essential oil smells great but also can kill off germs and bacteria. It has even been known to kill off E. Coli. By adding it to the homemade toilet cleaner it will help kill off even more germs and bacteria in the toilet bowl.
Step 4: Screw the lid back on your squeeze bottle and gently shake to mix everything up.
That is all you need to make this DIY toilet cleaner! Just three ingredients for a fresh and clean toilet.
Homemade Toilet Cleaner Instructions
Step 1: Gently shake the bottle before each use.
Step 2: Spray the mixture around the inside of your toilet bowl. You will want to use about 1/4-1/2 a cup per toilet bowl.
Note: If your toilet bowl is extremely dirty or stained you may need to use more.
Step 3: Let the mixture sit for about 20 minutes.
Step 4: Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl.
You can use any toilet brush but I love this one from Amazon. I have had it for about 6-7 years and it is still in great shape.
Step 5: Once you are done scrubbing give it a good flush. The toilet will be nice and clean.
Plus, the lavender oil makes it smell great instead of the nasty chemical smell you get from most toilet cleaners.

Vinegar will work great to clean and disinfect the toilet bowl. The acid in the vinegar will help break up any hard water deposits in your toilet bowl.
Since hard water can permanently etch surfaces you want to make sure you keep the hard water stains away.
Yes, vinegar also does a great job of killing off any germs that may be hanging out in your toilet. The toilet can contain 3.2 million bacteria per square inch!! That is disgusting. The lavender essential oils will kill germs also.
