These Valentine's Day Rice Krispie Treats are such an easy recipe and has a cake mix spin on the classic Rice Krispie Treats! These are the perfect way to celebrate, using simple ingredients, and also makes tasty treats that are fit for a bake sale!
We aren't big dessert people in my house. In fact, most desserts here involve brownie mix or frozen cookie dough. But when my sister shared her recipe for cake batter marshmallow treats a couple of years ago we became big fans.
But this time of year, we love delicious treats that are themed, plus they are the perfect dessert if you want something that is a quick and easy treat.
Ingredients Needed:
Butter - salted or unsalted butter can be used.
Marshmallows - mini marshmallows work the best for these because they melt more evenly.
Rice Krispies - you can also use store brand rice cereal.
Cake Mix
Pink Candy Melts
Sprinkles - grab some festive sprinkles to jazz them up for the holiday.
How to Make Valentine Rice Krispie Treats
STEP 1: Melt butter and marshmallows together in a large pot over medium heat.
STEP 2: Stir in the powdered cake mix until smooth.
STEP 3: Add the Rice Krispie cereal, and gently fold into the melted marshmallows.
STEP 4: Spread the cereal mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish and cool for 20 minutes.
STEP 5: Transfer the treats to a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper.
STEP 6: Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the Rice Krispies treats.
STEP 7: Melt the candy melts in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each cycle until smooth.
STEP 8: Dip each of the Rice Krispie hearts into the melted chocolate and immediately add the sprinkles. Allow them to dry completely before storing.
How to Store
Once the heart shape treats have set, transfer to an airtight container, or cover with plastic wrap, and store at room temperature for up to 1 week.
Tips for Making
Grease the baking with non-stick cooking spray to keep the cereal treats from sticking.
Do not cook the Rice Krispie mixture over high heat, this can cause scorching.
Substitutions and Variations
Chocolate - white chocolate chips or almond bark can be used in place of the candy melts. Simply turn it pink by adding red food coloring.
Thinner sweet treats - use a rimmed baking sheet instead of a casserole dish.
Large marshmallows - if using the bigger ones, cut them up into smaller pieces so they melt evenly.
Extra marshmallows - feel free to add a handful of mallows gently stir in so there are chunks through the heart-shaped Rice Krispie treats instead of all of them being melted.
On sticks - to make this Valentine's Rice Krispie treats recipe easier for kids to enjoy, add a lollipop stick through the bottom.
Other pretty colors - divide different color candy melts into mixing bowls and make heart Rice Krispie treats in colors or all sorts!
Skip homemade - if you are really short on time, but still want themed Valentine treats, grab a box from your local grocery store, unwrap them, and just do the dipping part.

Donna says
Have you tried dipping the Rice Krispie treat in chocolate?
Julie says
No, I haven't but I bet that would be good too!
Mom says
What flavor cake mix did you use? Would chocolate flavor cake mix work?
Julie says
I used Aldi brand Vanilla cake mix. I haven't tried anything but vanilla, so I don't know. Let me know what you think if you try chocolate.
Wendy says
This sounds good and I'd like to try it. I'm confused though--do I use prepared cake batter, or just cake mix? Thanks!
Julie says
Sorry for the confusion. You just need to use the powdered cake mix not batter.
sarah says
do you make the cake first or put in dry cake mix?
Julie says
Hi Sarah, sorry about that. Just put in the dry cake mix.
