Last week during the storm I went to make some rolls. Then I remembered we were completely out of butter. With 12 inches of snow on the ground I knew I wasn't getting to the store any time soon.
Then I remembered I had some heavy whipping cream left over. In about 15 minutes, I had homemade butter. If you have ever wondered how to make homemade butter check out my tips below.
Note: If you want spreadable butter, check out how to make your butter spreadable.
Making homemade butter only takes heavy whipping cream and a jar. It helps if you have a couple of extra hands around to help you make the butter. My arms get sore from shaking the jar, so I like to pass it around. This is a great activity for small children.
Just pour the heavy whipping cream in the jar, screw the lid on tight and start shaking. It usually takes around 6-7 minutes before you start to notice a change. The jar will start to get a lot harder to shake. It will start to look a lot like whipped cream.
Keep shaking for a few more minutes until it is easier to shake. You will notice it turns more like a milk and you can hear the butter sloshing around in the jar as you shake it.

The butter will form in a big ball and just float in the jar.
Now all that is left is to remove it from the jar. I use a spoon and place it in a bowl. You may need to drain the bowl a bit once you get all the butter out. I stored the butter in these small jars.
What is left in the jar now is buttermilk and you can use that in cooking. I love to use buttermilk to make biscuits. It's not hard to make homemade butter. With these simple tips on how to make homemade butter you can easily do it at home.
Homemade Butter
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1 jar
Place cream in jar and shake for about 10 minutes. Shake until the butter has separated from the buttermilk. Remove butter from the jar and place in a bowl. You may need to drain the bowl. Butter will keep in the fridge for weeks. The buttermilk will last about 1 week.

What??? This is so neat! I bet my kids would love to help "make the butter." We have completely switched from margarine to butter. We don't buy that stuff anymore. This might be neat for when I really need it. Cheaper too? Butter here is expensive. I would love if you linked this up to my Crafty Chaos Tuesday Party! Thanks so much for sharing!
