Learn how to safely wash and dry your minky blanket without ruining its luxurious softness in just a couple of easy steps and get our expert tips!

how to wash minky blankets

I can tell you that in the past I have ruined my little mink blanket a time or two. These are always my favorites because they are extremely soft, but when it comes to wash time it seemed like they were never the same.

So what mistake was I making (and maybe you have too)? The heat is what is destroying them! After that, I found the best way to keep all minky items, clean, soft, and fresh even after washing them multiple times.

As for different materials, I have also mastered cleaning leather, memory foam mattresses, and figured out how to make magic erasers for pennies on the dollar!

Don't forget that before cuddling up with that new minky, be sure to wash it first. It will remove excess dyes, get rid of odd smells, and it will not shed nearly as much the first time you use it.

What is a Minky Blanket?

A minky blanket is like a cozy hug in fabric form. It's made from a super soft and plush material called minky fabric, which is often used in baby blankets, throws, and even some stuffed animals.

The fabric is typically made from 100% polyester, and it has a velvety, plush texture that's incredibly gentle on the skin. People love these luxurious blankets because they're not only snuggly and warm but also really soothing to touch.

They often come in various colors, patterns, and sizes and are a popular choice for those shopping for babies.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Washing Minky Blankets Without Ruining It

To wash your minky blanket you will need a few things:

  • mild laundry detergent or
  • laundry detergent for delicates (I often use this or this)

Step 1: Place the minky blanket in the washing machine by itself. You don't want other colors or materials to transfer during the wash cycle.

Step 2: Add your detergent and turn on the gentle cycle. (don't use laundry pods for best results)

Step 3: Make sure it is set for cold water only.  (warm water could cause the minky fibers to stick together and lose its softness)

Step 4: Once the minky has finished the wash cycle, allow it to air dry on a flat surface (not in direct sunlight). If you need to dry it faster, place it in the dryer and tumble on low with no heat. Even the low heat setting can ruin the polyester fibers over time.

Helpful Tips and Best Practices

  • Sometimes these cuddly blankets come with their own care label or separate care instructions if purchased from a boutique. In that case, follow those instead. However, hand washing or gentle machine washing on the cold-delicate cycle has always worked for me.
  • Avoid using liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets. It can cause buildup and affect the softness of your blanket over time.
  • High heat will also damage the blanket fibers and make it lose its softness.
  • Do not bleach, iron, or dry clean.
  • We recommend avoiding hot water because it can make the blanket fade and shrink.
  • Feel free to follow these same instructions for other minky items like stuffed animals.
  • I would not recommend using laundry pods. Sometimes this will leave detergent residue during the washing process when only cold water is used. Use liquid or powder for best results.

How to Get Rid of Stubborn Stains

Spot cleaning should happen as soon as you see the stain if possible. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to dab the excess off.

Use a gentle detergent or stain remover (I love this homemade one!) and blot with cold or lukewarm water. Remove the excess water with a towel then follow the instructions above as you would normally wash.

Keeping Your Cozy Minky Blanket At Its Best

With special care, these blankets can last a long time! Along with the tips we provided above, it's a good idea to give it a regular washing every few weeks, just as you would any other blanket.

What is Considered Mild Laundry Detergent?

Mild detergents are made without harsh chemicals and are often labeled for babies, sensitive skin, or delicate materials. Woolite and Dreft are two common ones that you can find at most stores.

Common FAQs

Does minky fabric shrink when washed?

Anything made from minky material will normally not shrink when washed properly. Also, since these soft blankets are usually made from polyester they are not as prone to shrinking as cotton is.

Do minky blankets stay soft after you wash them?

When washed with proper care, yes they will stay soft. Air drying and cold water is key, as high heat really harms the delicate fibers.

Can You Wash a Weighted Blanket Made From Minky Material?

Yes. Simply follow the same guidelines as you normally would, avoid high heat, hot water, dry cleaning, and use a no-air setting if drying. However, we recommend laying flat to air dry.
