Want a clutter-free home? Check out these 6 things to declutter this fall. Spend a little time in each area and have your home looking free from clutter. Fall decluttering is easy with these tips!
Fall is one of my favorite times to declutter. The weather starts to cool off and you can open up the windows and shake the dust off those rarely used things.
One of the nice things about decluttering a few times a year is you can pick things that you just finished using (or have not been using) and declutter them.
For example, if you have spent the whole summer and haven't used the grill it may be time to get rid of it.
Things To Declutter This Fall
- Garage (and landscaping stuff)
- Summer & Fall Clothes
- School Supplies
- Toys
- Lunch Items (think Tupperware, water bottles, etc.)
When you are decluttering during the fall season start by decluttering things in your garage. You can also do summer and fall clothes you know you won't wear.
Finally, the last few things I like to declutter are kids' stuff. When the kids go back to school I always have a little extra time on my hands so I like to go through school supplies, toys, and lunch stuff to get rid of anything I don't need.

Fall Clothes
Now is a great time to declutter your fall clothes. Go through everything you normally wear this time of year and get rid of anything that you don't like.
We all have those clothes that we hate to get rid of but never wear.
Try on all your fall clothes and get rid of any that don't fit you too. If it isn't something you will wear donate it.
Once you have all your clothes down to what you think you are going to keep then I recommend hanging everything with the hanger backward on the rod.
As you wear clothes and put them back in your closet hang them with the hanger going the right way.
Then at the end of fall you can see what you wore and didn't. Donate any of the clothes that you didn't wear.
Unless your closet is huge it really shouldn't take more than an hour or so to go through and declutter. Your closet will look nicer and you will easily be able to see the clothes you do wear and love once you declutter it.
Yard Equipment
Summer is over and it's about time to put up all your lawn and garden equipment.
Before you clean and put everything away for winter make sure you get rid of anything you no longer use.
Recently I talked my husband into getting rid of a tool we bought 15 years ago to do a brick patio. We have long since moved and don't plan on doing another one so it makes no sense to hang onto it.
Now is a great time because you really know what you used and what is just sitting there collecting dust.
Most likely you will spend less than an hour decluttering and you will have more room in your home for the things you do use.

Toys To Declutter This Fall
If you have school-age children now is a great time to declutter their toys.
I always wait for my kiddo to start school and then go through all of their toys. This always works well because they aren't around so I have more time to do decluttering.
It's easy to do and doesn't have to take a lot of time with these steps.
- Start by getting rid of any broken toys. Replace the batteries in the toys that need it.
- Put back all the toys that you know they use and love.
- Create a pile of toys to have kids go through and decide what they want to keep or get rid of.
When my son was really young I didn't call it decluttering. I would talk to him about what toys he would like to give to kids that didn't have as many toys like him. I found this worked really well because he was more excited about sharing his toys.
Even little kids can go through and declutter. By already removing all the toys you know they love it makes it easier to have them help choose what toys they want to declutter. Plus, they are learning how to declutter and making decisions.
Toys are one of my favorite things to declutter in fall.
Garage
Fall is my favorite time of year. The weather is usually not as hot and we don't get a lot of rain. Which makes it the perfect time to clean out the garage.
Pick a nice weekend and go through and declutter your garage this fall.
I won't lie, decluttering the garage isn't a quick and easy decluttering project but it feels so good to do!
- Clean out any cabinets and donate things you no longer use. Also, go through anything on your walls or that is just sitting around.
- Go through sports equipment or have kids help with the sports equipment. I tend to be really optimistic about sports equipment we might someday use and that's ok!
- If you are questioning yourself put it in a box and write the date on it. If you don't use it in 6 months then donate it.
Once you have your garage decluttered and clean you will love how nice it feels to come home and pull into the garage.
School Supplies/Office Supplies
Now that the kids are back to school this is a great time to declutter any school or office supplies you aren't using.
- Throw out any broken or old school supplies that don't work. Check all your pens and markers to make sure they still have ink in them.
- You can donate school supplies your kids won't use or have outgrown. Plenty of schools are happy to have any supplies.
It only takes about 30 minutes to go through school and office supplies but it will make it easier to find things that you need. It is such an easy thing to declutter this fall.
Lunch Box Accessories & Tupperware To Declutter This Fall
If your Tupperware drawer is a hot mess now is the time to go through and declutter it.
Make sure all your Tupperware have matches and get rid of any that don't. Go through any lunch box accessories you currently have and make sure you are still using them.
For years I struggled with a messy Tupperware drawer and couldn't find matches when I needed them.
Finally last year I reorganized my drawer and I love how easy it is to find things now. Decluttering and organizing your Tupperware and lunch supplies won't take a lot of time but will make a big difference. No more time spent searching for missing lids when you need them.
What To Do With Your Decluttered Items?
By the time you finish with your fall decluttering, you will probably have a pile of decluttered items.
- Obviously, some things will probably just get thrown out like old sprays from your garage and broken school or art supplies.
- Some things you may want to sell or donate. Personally, I like to donate most things. I have found that I can quickly get the stuff out of my house by donating them.
- If you wait until a garage sale you still have to keep the stuff in your house.
Spending a few hours this fall can help you get your home decluttered and organized.
It doesn't have to take a bunch of time, just 30 minutes here and there will help you declutter this fall. Having a decluttered home will not only save you time but make your home feel cleaner and more organized.
