Do you feel like you get a crazy amount of junk mail every day? I know the feeling! For years we would get so much junk mail.
I felt like 75% percent of our mail was going straight to the trash.
We had tons of credit card offers, flyers I didn't look at, and much more. I had decluttered our home, but the mail was still causing so much clutter.
Then, when my son was a sophomore in high school the college stuff started. Postcards and letters were coming every day. This year he started his senior year and they are just getting worse. He would often get 5-6 mailers a day.
All of the college mailers kind of pushed me over the edge. I was tired of all the mail that was being thrown out. If I forgot to get the mail for a day or two (which I often do) our mailbox would be close to full.
I decided to see what I could do about all the junk mail that we received. I was surprised to find out it was easier than I expected to put a stop to the junk mail.
I also was surprised to find out you can spend up to 8 months of your life opening junk mail. That is beyond crazy to me.
If you are tired of throwing out all that mail check out my favorite tips below on how to stop junk mail for good!
How To Stop Junk Mail
With just a few minutes every day, you can put a stop to all the junk mail and free up some time in your life! Check out a few quick steps below to stop the junk mail.
Stopping Coupons and Flyers
I know some people love getting the flyers and the coupons, but I am not a big fan of them. Usually, I do my meal planning early in the week before the store flyers get here so they were just getting thrown away.
I also never used any of the coupons from the Valpak I would get. I found that most of them were for things like window cleaning or air duct cleaning that I didn't pay someone to do.
Stopping this kind of junk mail was high on my priority list!
If you don't like getting all the flyers and coupons in the mail there are a few things you can do.
How To Stop Valpak Junk Mail
Valpak is very easy to stop. Just go here and fill out this form to stop the delivery of Valpak. As with most places, it may take a few weeks to take effect.

How To Stop Retail Me Not Junk Mail
If you don't like the coupon inserts you get in the mail you can stop those too. Retail Me Not is a coupon insert that a lot of people receive. It used to be called RedPlum but has since changed names. You can go here to stop the inserts.
How To Stop Getting Grocery Store Junk Mail
I found the hardest one to stop was the flyers for the grocery stores. I had to make two calls to get it to stop.
My local grocery store flyers come together in a flyer called Buyers Edge. Unsubscribing from Buyers Edge can take a little time and sometimes a few calls. I called the number on it to get removed once, with no luck.
After a few months, I called back and was successful. From some online forums, it seems like the Buyers Edge may be nationwide. You can call them at 1-888-357-7827 to stop Buyers Edge flyers.

Stopping Credit Card Junk Mail
If you are like me credit card applications are abundant. We would often get 1-2 a day.
I am probably crazy, but I don't like just throwing them away. Usually, I would either put them through the shredder or tear them up a few times.
I was so happy to easily find a way to make the credit card applications stop. If you too are tired of the applications you can go to Opt-Out Prescreen and opt out of credit and insurance junk mail.
It is easy and doesn't take a lot of time.
With this service, you can opt-out for 5 years or forever. There is also a way to opt back in if you want to.
They do ask for your social security number, however, you don't have to give it.
Just keep in mind you may still get some offers if you don't offer up your social security number. You can go here to sign up and stop the credit card junk mail.
FYI: I used this service and didn't give my SSN but it still cut back on nearly 90% of the credit card junk mail.
How To Stop Other Mail
If you are like us you receive a lot of miscellaneous mail. We get mail from places we have bought from in the past or places that we made donations to.
For example, we made a donation to the Alzheimers Association as a request in lieu of flowers for a funeral. After that, we continued to get mail every month from them.
I have found in cases like this I actually need to contact them and ask to be taken off of their list. It is a little bit of work, but if you are getting mail repeated from them I think it is worth the time.
Instead of throwing out mail like that I just put it in a pile and whenever I get a few minutes I try contacting the places to take me off their list.

Stopping catalogs is pretty easy, you just need to do it one magazine at a time. I highly recommend using Catalog Choice. It is free to use and works really well.
To use it you need to sign up for an account. Once you sign up then you can start canceling.
Each time a catalog shows up in our mailbox that I don't wish to get anymore I just go to Catalog Choice and find the catalog. They will give step-by-step directions on how to unsubscribe. It is so easy to do and they do way more mail than just catalogs!
After you opt-out of the catalog, it will ask for a donation. You don't need to donate to opt out. It may take a few weeks but you should stop getting those catalogs.
