How To Sharpen A Scissors

Recently I was decluttering my junk drawer and noticed how old the scissors were looking. They have seen better days for sure.

I have had problems with them cutting recently and so thought for a minute or two about getting new scissors.

Then I remembered how well sharpening scissors worked on my kitchen scissors so I decided to try to sharpen them. It only took a few minutes and I was amazed at the difference it made.

The Best Way To Sharpen Scissors

You will need a few things to sharpen your scissors.

Items to sharpen scissors:

• Scissor sharpener (you can buy electric but I prefer a smaller one like this)
• dull scissors
• microfiber cloth (or dish rag)
• dish soap

There are a few simple tips on how to sharpen a scissors. First I recommend a nice sharpener. I have a knife and scissor sharpener like this one.

Although it was around $15 I use it all the time to sharpen my knives. A little bit of money upfront will save you money in the long run.

Getting Started

I recommend you do this in an area that is easy to clean up. The idea of having little metal shavings after sharpening it grosses me out, so I highly recommend you do it in a trash can or over the sink.

Then, just follow the tips below for the best way to sharpen your scissors.

Step 1: To start, you will want to wash your scissors off. I just use a little bit of dawn soap and hot water. You want to make sure if there is anything on your scissors it doesn't get transferred to the sharpener.

Step 2: Dry your scissors completely after washing them.

Step 3: Get your scissors sharpener and use the side that matches the scissors. There should be a left-handed side and a right-handed side.

So, if you have left-handed scissors use the left-handed side and the same for right-handed scissors.

Step 4: Run the scissors through the sharpener from the back of the scissors to the front about 6-7 times.

Note: If you need to you can also run one side at a time through the sharpener. You may need to do this for larger scissors.

Step 5: Once you have run the scissors through 6-7 times test the scissors on a piece of paper.

If they are sharp enough you can move on to step 6. If not, then repeat steps 4 and 5 again.

Step 6: When you are finished sharpening the scissors go back and wash them again with warm soapy water. This will help remove any of the small shavings that came off during sharpening.

Then dry your scissors and they are ready to be used again.

Step 7: After drying your scissors make sure you go back and clean your sharpener. I like to clean mine using dish soap and warm water. Make sure you dry it completely with a towel to prevent rust.

That is all there is to sharpen a scissors. It's just that easy and only takes a few minutes of your time and makes a huge difference in the way your scissors cut. Say goodbye to dull scissors forever!
