How To Remove Limescale from Faucets

If you have been a reader for very long you know that I have complained before about the really hard water we have at our house. I actually prefer hard water for showering, however it makes a mess of things like the shower door and our drinking glasses. The hard water also causes some limescale build-up on faucets.

Some of our faucets like the sink faucets are easy to remove limescale from faucet by unscrewing part of the faucet head and soaking in vinegar. My bathtub faucet is not so easily cleaned so I came up with this easy trick to remove limescale. If you are struggling to remove limescale from faucets check out these simple tips.

What Is Limescale Build-up?

If you have been noticing a thick green build-up on your faucet you are probably familiar with limescale build-up.

Limescale is usually a combination of calcium and magnesium that is in your water. Depending on where you live you may have varying amounts of minerals in your water.

If you have a water softener it can prevent the hard water build up, but if you don't have one you will need to remove the limescale build up from around your faucets occasionally.

Removing The Limescale From Faucets

To start you will need a few of the items below. This will help you easily remove the limescale without scrubbing.

• Limey or a ziploc bag ( you will also need a clip if you use a ziploc)
• Microfiber towel  (these cloths from Amazon are my favorites!)
• white vinegar (just the basic vinegar you get at the store)

Getting Started

Pour about 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups of vinegar in the Limey or plastic bag. Place the Limey over the faucet head so it is covering the area with the limescale.

If you are using a plastic bag you will need to twist the top of the bag and attach the clip so it keeps the bag on the faucet.

Make sure that the faucet head is still submerged in the vinegar. Set a timer for 20 minutes and let it soak.

After 20 minutes is up come back and check the faucet head. My limescale build-up was really bad so 20 minutes removed some, but not all of the limescale.

Clean The Faucet And Soak Longer If Needed

Wipe down the faucet head using a microfiber cloth after checking it and then add the Limey back onto the faucet if the limescale isn't completely gone.

Set a timer for another 10-20 minutes depending on how much build up you still have on the faucet.

After the timer has gone off remove the Limey and wipe down the faucet again.

All of the limescale should be removed from the faucet. Rinse the faucet with some water to remove all of the vinegar (you don't want to leave the vinegar on because it could damage the faucet) and you can now clean the faucet as you normally would.

If you have a faucet with a delicate finish I would recommend checking the faucet every 5 minutes instead of 20 with the vinegar soak.

Vinegar could remove or damage the surface finish. It's best with a delicate finish to start slowly with the vinegar to avoid any damage.
