Learn the best way to clean your nasty glass panels on the oven door without using harsh chemicals and in a few simple steps in just 20 minutes!
I recently opened my oven to realize that it was a nasty mess. I had dropped some cheese on the door and then it quickly hardened to the glass oven door.
It was now burnt and crispy hanging. I decided it was definitely time for a deep cleaning.
I like to find ways to clean without using commercial cleaners. Mainly because it saves us money, but also because a bunch of chemicals where I put my food is kind of gross.
Because aerosol oven sprays can cause burns and lung irritation I prefer not to use them.
What You Need:
- Baking Soda - adds a little abrasiveness
- Dish Soap - I prefer the blue Dawn. It really lifts the baked-on grease.
- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
- Clean Microfiber Cloth
- Glass Cleaner - I use homemade glass cleaner made with white vinegar.
How to Clean Oven Glass Easily
STEP 1: Wipe down the oven glass door with a magic eraser. They get rid of food particles and baked on grease better than a regular sponge. If there's any loose debris, go ahead and knock it off.
I don't buy my magic erasers in the store. I actually order them off Amazon where I can pick them up for about $.08 a piece. Just give it a quick wipe down getting any of the easy to get off junk.
STEP 2: Sprinkle the baking soda over the glass panes, using about 1/4 cup.
STEP 3: Drizzle 1/2 tablespoon of dish soap over top.
STEP 4: Add a little water to make it a baking soda paste. I used a spray bottle until it was damp.
STEP 5: Use the magic eraser and spread the thick paste on the glass of your oven window. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Do not allow it to dry.
STEP 6: Once it has sat, use the eraser again to remove the grease, and viola! Most of the baked-on food and grease should come right off. If not, use a little elbow grease to scrub the stubborn stains.
STEP 7: After most of the water paste has been removed, wash out the magic eraser and go back over the interior glass once or twice to make sure all of the paste is gone.
STEP 8: To add a little extra shine, use my DIY glass cleaning solution and wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. If you have other glass cleaners you can use those as well.

Helpful Tips
- Some like to use a paper towel, but this leaves behind fuzzles so I prefer a dry cloth like microfibers.
- If you can't get all of the brown stains off or there is something sticky you can try using the flat edge of a razor blade to lift it off first before starting. Remember to keep it as a 45-degree angle to it doesn't scratch.
- In extreme cases when it hasn't been cleaned in a while you may need to repeat the process with the baking soda solution.
- If you want to prevent a big mess from spills in the future check out these oven liners. They work great to keep the bottom of your oven free from spills and are easy to wash.
- See how to clean the inside, including the bottom of the oven without using commercial oven cleaner.
How Often Should You Clean the Inside of the Glass of an Oven?
I recommend wiping it down weekly at least with a damp cloth and adding this cleaning process to your kitchen cleaning routine once a month.
Doesn't a Self-Cleaning Oven Clean Itself?
You would think with such high heat that yes it would. But really the self-clean cycle just heats up really quick to burn off what's left in there and on the oven racks. It's a good idea to still wipe it down even after a self-cleaning cycle, but be sure it has cooled completely.

I've done the paste before but I didn't use a magic eraser. I really need to clean our oven glass, so thanks for getting me motivated!
