Granite is beautiful and fairly easy to take care of. However, sometimes over the years it can lose its shine and start to look dull and dirty.

How To Deep Clean Granite Countertops

To give your granite countertops a good deep cleaning you need a few things.

• Microfiber cloth (I love this brand! I have had them for years and they work great!)
• dish soap
• barkeepers friend (if you have hard water stains)
• granite spray
• stain remover (if you have stains)

Getting Started

To start, make sure you don't have any food or drink dried on the granite. It is easy not to see the stuck-on food sometimes because of all the colors and patterns in the granite.

I have noticed I tend to get stuck on food around the stove when I am cooking. You can easily find any spots by running your hands over the granite to feel for rough spots.

If you do have stuck on food just take a damp microfiber cloth and let it sit on the spot for a few minutes. Then it should easily wipe away.

Removing Water Stains on Granite

Next, you will want to get rid of any water stains on your granite. Water stains tend to gather around faucets making the granite look dull.

Get rid of those water stains on granite to make it look fresh and new again. I like to use bar keepers friend to get rid of water stains.

After testing the granite add a bit of bar keepers friend to a microfiber cloth and lightly rub for about 20 seconds. This should get rid of the watermarks. You can see all the details on how to remove a water stain on granite here.

Removing Stains From Granite

If you have any stains on your granite countertop now is the time to remove them.

Everything from coffee to berries can soak in to the granite and stain it.

The easiest way to remove the stains is by using a poultice powder.

You can buy this at a local granite company or you can get them online. Amazon has some highly rated ones for a great price.

Removing Oils and Grime From Granite

Once you have removed all of the food, watermarks, and stains you will want to really clean the countertops.

Remove everything from the counters and then scrub them down with some Dawn soap and water.

This will remove all of the grease and grime from your granite countertops.

Over time you tend to get grease buildup from cooking that you may not notice. That greasy buildup makes your countertops dull.

To really deep clean granite countertops I recommend filling your sink up with about a gallon of water and adding about a tablespoon of dawn soap.

Wet and wring out a microfiber cloth in the soap mixture and scrub your countertops. Make sure you scrub the edges too. My sink edges are often neglected in everyday cleaning so it's amazing how dirty they can get.

When you have all of the granite countertops scrubbed down then wash out the microfiber cloth and wipe down the granite countertops one more time with just water. Make sure you get all the soap residue from the countertops.

Reseal Granite Countertops if Needed

Depending on how long it has been since you have sealed your granite countertops they may need to be resealed.

It's recommended to seal your countertops every 6 month to a year.

Making Your Granite Shine

Now that your countertops are clean it is time to add some sparkle to them! I love this DIY granite spray to get them disinfected and sparkly clean. The rubbing alcohol kills any germs that might be left in the porous granite.

The rubbing alcohol also adds the shine. Just spray down the countertops with the granite spray (or a store-bought one if you prefer) and wipe them down with a microfiber cloth. It will leave a shine on your granite like they are brand new.

It only takes about 20 minutes total to deep clean granite countertops but the difference is amazing. I try to go through and deep clean my granite countertops every other week. Deep cleaning granite keeps the dust and grime away and your granite countertops looking great.
