If you have been dealing with fruit flies in the past check out these easy tips to prevent and get rid of fruit flies.
Getting Rid Of Fruit Flies
There are a few simple tricks to get rid of fruit flies no matter how bad they are. The best part is you don't need a bunch of chemicals.
If you want to get rid of your fruit flies once and for all follow the directions below.
I recommend using a few things.
Items You Will Need:
- Dawn Dish Soap
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Lemongrass Essential Oil (I usually get mine from Amazon)
- If you want an easy solution, Amazon sells these chemical-free plug-ins
Move The Fruit
First, I recommend moving your fruit when you are dealing with fruit flies. I usually keep some fresh fruit in a bowl on my counter. But, when the fruit flies come around I put up the fruit.
Try storing the food in the fridge or just using the fruit quickly. To store your fruit in the fridge wash it down well and dry it to make sure that you remove any eggs from the fruit. Then store it in the fridge.
If you are concerned about storing your fruit in the fridge you can also store it in a paper bag. Just keep in mind the fruit will ripen faster in the bag.
Fruit flies seem attracted to bananas, so you can always make some banana bread to get rid of the fruit quickly.
Clean The Area
Fruit flies are attracted to decaying fruit and fruit juices so you will want to really clean the area where the fruit was stored.
I recommend washing down the area with the fruit flies with some soap and water. I just use some hot, soapy water (like my homemade Dawn powerwash) to wipe down my counters and the fruit bowl.
If they are in your sink, scrub your sink and the drain down too. You want to eliminate any fruit or food traces that may attract them.
A drain is a great place for fruit flies to gather so pay extra attention to cleaning it. You can see my tips for getting rid of the smells in the drain.
Spray With Alcohol
Once you have the counter washed off and all traces of the fruit removed you may want to spray it down with rubbing alcohol. Keep in mind rubbing alcohol may not be safe for all surfaces. Always test in a small area.
Take straight rubbing alcohol and pour some into a spray bottle. Spray down the area with the fruit flies.
Alcohol will not only kill the fruit flies instantly, but the smell will keep them from coming back. Let the area dry before you use it.
If you can't stand the smell of rubbing alcohol try adding about 10-15 drops of lemongrass oil to the alcohol. Getting rid of fruit flies with alcohol is easy and very effective.
Fruit flies hate the smell of lemongrass oil, so they will stay away. You may need to repeat this homemade spray to kill fruit flies for a couple of days to get the fruit flies to disappear.

Our fruit flies were terrible this year! We ended up doing this whole paper cone/quart jar/vinegar solution idea off pinterest that worked well, but I had to remake the mixture every few days. I wish I'd known that they're particularly attracted to bananas. We always have a bunch or two on the counter!
