Adding Fried Onions
Once your casserole is done you will want to add the fried onions. There are three ways you can do this.
The simplest is just to add the fried onions on top and serve it this way. The fried onions are not browned like they would be in the oven, but I have never noticed a big difference.
You can also use a pan and toss the onions in the pan to heat for a few minutes. Keep the stove on medium heat and it will brown them up.
The third way is to carefully remove the crockpot insert from the metal base.
Note: It will be very hot so make sure you use oven mitts.
Sprinkle fried onions over the top of the green bean casserole and bake in the oven for about 5 minutes at 350 degrees or until the fried onions are starting to brown. Remove from oven and place back into crock pot base to serve.
Tips For Making The Perfect Casserole
This recipe calls for canned green beans, but you can use fresh. You will need to cook for about 1-2 hours longer using fresh green beans.
You can use frozen green beans instead, but let them thaw before putting them in the crockpot.
If you will be having leftovers you may want to leave the fried onions on the side. That way they don't get mushy.
Using the highest setting on your slow cooker will help keep the green beans cooking quickly and not get soggy. This is one of those recipes where low and slow isn't the best way to go.
You can free up your oven during the holidays or just for dinner with this easy recipe. With just a few minutes time you have a green bean casserole that tastes like it came straight from the oven.
