Learn how to make homemade wrinkle remover using simple ingredients that will save you money, time, and the hassle of ironing!
I am really bad with laundry. I, for some reason, can wash and dry the laundry, but can't get it put away.
This means we are always and forever dealing with wrinkled clothes. Over the years I have realized wrinkle releaser is my best friend. I love how it quickly removes the stubborn wrinkles from our clothes and I don't have to drag out the ironing board.
Downy wrinkle release that you buy in the store is great, the only problem is the price. I usually pay close to $5 a bottle.
So, when I came across this recipe here I was so excited. I have used this DIY wrinkle releaser spray for the last couple of years and it works great.
I am all about homemade cleaners to help ditch the harsh chemicals! Before you go, be sure to see my DIY Dusting spray, homemade jewelry cleaner, and the best natural all purpose cleaner. The best part is that these recipes are also going to save you major cash while still doing a great job at cleaning.
What You Need:
- Empty Spray Bottle (I love these from Amazon)
- Water
- Fabric Softener (Any brand) - I have tried different kinds of fabric softener and can't tell the difference, so I just stick with the cheapest or on sale that week or use my own natural fabric softener.
How To Make Homemade Wrinkle Release Spray
Combine 2 tablespoons of fabric softener with 2 cups of water nto a container that is easy to pour from.
Mix together well.
Pour in a small spray bottle.
Store in the laundry room.
How to Use DIY Wrinkle Spray
Shake the homemade spray.
Spray a generous amount on the wrinkled items over a flat surface and run your fingers over it. Then hang on a clothes hanger to dry.
The wrinkles disappear and within a few minutes, the item is dry. Plus, it makes your clothes smell great too.
Here is a wrinkled dress shirt from the laundry basket.
And here it is after spraying it with the wrinkle releaser. It looks much better and no iron was needed!

Helpful Tips and Variations
Test on a Small Area First: Before using your homemade spray on a garment, do a patch test on an inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.
Use Distilled Water: Using distilled water instead of tap water helps prevent mineral buildup in the spray bottle and avoids residue on clothes.
Shake Before Each Use: Homemade sprays may separate over time. Shake the bottle well before spraying for the best results.
Hang to Dry: For best results, hang the garment on a hanger or lay it flat to air dry after applying the spray.
Travel Size: Pour some in a little bottle for on the go wrinkles and when you travel.
Can You Make This a More Natural DIY Wrinkle Release Spray?
Absolutely! I have a DIY fabric softener that uses natural ingredients (vinegar and essential oils) that you can use in place of the store-bought softener.
Can I use this spray on all types of fabrics?
Most fabrics can handle homemade wrinkle release spray, but delicate items and specialty fabrics like silk and wool may require extra caution. Always test first.

Will tap water work fine or should we use distilled?
Julie says
Tap water should be just fine for the homemade wrinkle release.

This is awesome! I don't own an iron and always throw clothes in the dryer before wearing if they are wrinkled. This is so muchfaster and leaves clothes smelling extra nice. My husband couldn't believe it worked and he loves the way his clothes smell now. Thanks for sharing.

So glad you liked it!

Okay, I'm skeptical, as someone that hates wrinkles. Does the spray leave a spot on the clothes? Does the clothing truly look like it does not need to be ironed, after you have used the spray? I don't doubt you; just want to make sure before I buy the product.

Once the spray dries it doesn't leave any spots on the clothes. I use it on my husbands white dress shirts without any problems. I personally think it looks great after being sprayed. No iron needed.

I'm totally going to try this since I sometimes forget laundry in the dryer and I hate to iron too.

It's great for that! I haven't used my iron in years. 🙂
